Throat infection caused by Streptococcus bacteria is quite often during flu season. The infection isn’t really serious but it can be quite unpleasant. The infection usually passes in less than a week, but in the mean time, it is quite infectious. What can you do to relieve the pain during the infection and which home remedies for strep throat work will be our focus for today.
Strep throat infection
Streptococcus is a genus of bacteria that, in most cases, causes the throat infection during the flu season. The symptoms of the infection are sore throat with inflammation or swelling, difficulty when breathing or swallowing, cough with mucus, headaches, nausea, weakness in body, enlarged lymph nodes, poor appetite, sometimes fever and excessive sweating. Most people however only experience a runny nose and coughing or sneezing. Since the infection is caused by a bacteria, it is very contagious and you can easily infect others with it. The infection can be passed by sneezing, coughing or by direct touch. If you are infected, it’s important to try to prevent the infection from spreading. Always wash your hands and cough or sneeze into a tissue. You should also buy a new toothbrush after the infection as bacteria can remain on your old toothbrush and you risk getting infected again. In most cases, the infection is treated with an antibiotic but there are some home remedies for strep throat as well.
Home remedies for strep throat
While home remedies for strep throat cannot destroy the bacteria causing the infection, they can help you relieve some of the symptoms of the disease and help you get better. One of the most annoying things about the strep throat infection is the coughing or sneezing. Warm water mixed with a tablespoon of salt can help you with that. Mix them in a glass, gargle the liquid and spit it out. Do not swallow. Repeat this procedure a couple of times a day. Chamomile tea is also a great home remedy. You should be drinking a lot of liquid during the infection, so try to drink as much tea as possible. You can mix it with honey and add lemon juice as it will help heal the throat. Green tea is also good if you prefer it to Chamomile tea. Avoid drinking liquids that are too hot or too cold. Let the tea cool down a bit before you drink it. You should also eat chicken broth every now and then. If you have serious problems with a sore throat, you can buy some cough drops and use them to help with the pain. There isn’t much else you can do, you will just have to endure these 5 – 7 days. You should be fine after that.
Things to keep in mind
If you decided to use antibiotics instead of home remedies for strep throat, you should know that you will be infections even a couple of days after you start taking them. Try to prevent the infection from spreading during this time. Strep throat infections are quite common and they are not really dangerous. You should get well in about a week. If the infections lasts longer than that, it is possible that you got infected again by another person or from objects such as your old toothbrush. You should also visit the doctor if you don’t see any signs of improvement after a week, as the disease could become more serious if it is not treated for longer periods of time.
